Flick The Switch

For most of my life I was unhappy. The common denominator was I thought of myself way more than I thought about others. I was selfish.

For almost 30 years I lived a crappy life of drugs, drinking, over-spending, anger, sadness and other erratic emotions and behaviour. My so-called outlets never solved a thing. In fact as you may have already discerned, they made my life worse. I was always on the move because I was trying to get past how I really felt inside. I loved to travel even if just for a few hours but once I got where I was going, I soon wanted to leave. My misdirected, emotionally driven need to feel better induced compulsive behaviour.

‘It was like being on monkey bars’. I would swing from rung to rung (party to party, purchase to purchase etc…) and would try to hold on tight because outside of that, I was miserable and unhappy much of the time. I aspired to be the centre of attention and would regularly overindulge. The financial, emotional, mental and physical price paid in the aftermath of my indulgences by far outweighed my feeble, sometimes illegal attempts to be happy. Yet, it continued for years… Such a waste!

I was like a hamster on his wheel. I had developed a pattern of regular intoxication, failed relationships, outbursts and denial. I was empty and often felt alone. You don’t have to go down the same or similar path and experience continuous negativity in your life.

‘Happiness comes from within’

I had heard this so many times but I didn’t understand.

If it’s true, what’s the source of this happiness?

How do I get it? Where do I get it?

‘It’s not about you’

“Flick the switch” as my wife Jaana says. Don’t think about what people can do for you. Think about what you can do for them and don’t expect anything in return. Forgive, love and help others and don’t waste another day looking to the world for answers. That’s not where you’ll find them.

But what enables us to flick the switch?

A foundation of faith in Jesus affords us so much, including the ability to lay our problems down and be at peace with ourselves. There are countless Christians who experience this daily.

I understand if you’re hesitant. For the longest time I never thought I would become a Christian. Eventually you too will come to a point when you hope there has to be more. Thankfully there is.

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

For you are loved. You are forgiven. You are perfect in His eyes. With Jesus in your heart you will be transformed. He sets you on the path you were truly meant to be on.

You can start reading about Jesus’ perfect, selfless, sinless life in the bible’s book of ‘John’ (NLT). A life He gave for you and I. Think on His grace, His suffering and sacrifice at the cross. Think on His perfect love for you.

Our happiness and our lives are one with Jesus. He is the answer  🙂
